Elsevier approached the University of Pennsylvania’s interactive on-line Cancer Information Service, known as OncoLink. This site provides information to the public and the profession about cancers, types and treatments, and provides a facility for who are dealing with their own treatments to contribute their stories, prognoses, treatment regimes, and side effects. Elsevier saw this facility, and wanted to help the Centre reach people who didn't have access to the Internet, or found it difficult to use on-line tools to find the information they needed about cancers affecting them or loved ones. The concept of a series was created, with each title in the series focusing on a specific type of cancer.

The previous edition was a good seller, but the single colour used and the rather uninviting page design had lost marketing ground against its competitors. TEP wanted to regain marketshare, which meant presenting the material in a more student-accessible manner, and using a second colour enabled far greater options in making the information more accessible.
The cover concept attempts to emulate the iconic work of Piet Mondrian, and through the use of grid represents the compartmentalization and stratification of a society. The emphasis on variation of the primary colours, while limited to the process palette, shows diversification within the strict grid, as well as offers promise of the interior of the title.
