Here’s a cool typography art site I found courtesy of the Graphic Designers of Canada listserv (one of the best sources of information and support for designers on the planet, IMHO)! Loads of fun!
My 9 year old daughter had a spelling assignment that required her to design a “Magazine Cover” that included the words on the current week’s spelling list. Knowing she had a flair for design (both parents earn money by designing print objects), and a working knowledge of Apple iWorks application Pages, we went to town. You can see the end result here. We started with typeface choice. I showed her how to create a Project folder for the typefaces she wanted to use (we went through FontBook, picking what she thought were faces appropriate to each of the words in the spelling list), then went through the assignment instructions to make sure we knew what the teacher wanted so that the design didn't miss any of the required points (Spelling words underlined in red, include at least three blurbs, use of illustrations, colour), then went to town. I gave her a few ideas about proximity, positioning, colour compliments, and then critiqued as she proceeded with the work. Pages, a really smart 9 year-old, and an indulgent dad as Art Director. Send me some feedback, and if it’s kind and constructive, I’ll pass it on!
